Today I will show you how to to multiply, divide, add, and subtract Integers.

ADDING

Say the problem is -24+12. To solve it you have to subtract 24 with 12. Why ? Because if you go 24 back from 0 and back 12 it would be the same as subtracting 24 with 12. the answer would be -12. If you had 2 negatives instead of 1 negative and 1 positive, you would add them together.

Same as with two positives.

SUBTRACTING

Watch closely at what I am doing because subtracting is confusing. Say the problem is 9 - (-8). Change subtraction to addition and change the second number to its opposite (2 (-2) ). Do this to EVERY integer subtracting problem. So the problem should look like this 9+8. then add them together. You should get 17.

MULTIPLICATION

say the problem is -7 x -9.If the signs are the same than it is positive, if the signs are different then it is negative. Now with the rule I showed you try to solve it . Did you get 63?

DIVISION

say the problem is 90 divided by -10. You would use the same rules as multiplication. The answer is -9.

VOCABULARY

Integer: the set of whole numbers and their opposites

opposite:a number that is the same distance away from 0 on the number line, but on the opposite side of 0

absolute value: the distance a number is away from 0
